EMILY @ THE EDGE OF CHAOS, featuring the voices of luminaries such as Lily Tomlin, John Lithgow and Leonard Nimoy will premiere on May 7 with Kino Lorber. The doc is scored by Miriam Cutler Composer Page.
Emily @ the Edge of Chaos interweaves Emily Levine’s live performance with animation, appearances by scientists, and animated characters (John Lithgow as Sir Isaac Newton, Lily Tomlin as Ayn Rand, Leonard Nimoy as Sigmund Freud, Richard Lewis as Aristotle, Matt Groening as Aldo Leopold). The film uses physics, which explains how the universe works, to explain our metaphysics – the story of our values, our institutions, our interactions. Using her own experience and a custom blend of insight and humor, provocation and inspiration, personal story and social commentary, Emily takes her audience through its own paradigm shift: from the Fear of Change to the EDGE OF CHAOS!
Emily Levine, like her film, was one-of-a-kind. She was a television writer and producer (Designing Women, Love & War and Dangerous Minds), a stand-up performer, and an out-of-the box-thinker, whose brilliant TED Talks have been watched by millions. She made this film with Wendy Apple, who produced and directed it.
Wendy died in 2017 and Emily continued working on the film until she also passed away in 2019. ... See MoreSee Less

Variety reports on composer agencies and databases on the rise who's mission are to bring diverse voices to the forefront of the film music industry. Arbel Bedak (Spectra Creative Agency) with Rebecca Grierson and Anne Booty (SixtyFour Music) are some of the advocates featured in the article. The article also talks about 'Free the Work,' helping to grow a database of composers that offers choices to producers and promotes equal hiring practices within the industry.
“Evil Eye” composer Ronit Kirchman Music believes initiatives like Free the Work are on the right track. “Looking at an equal number of women and men for a given job would be pretty transformative,” she says. “That’s something that could be done from an institutional standpoint that I believe would have an effect on individual project hiring. People need to take a proactive stance when compiling their shortlists. That is definitely starting to happen.”

Film composer and multi-instrumentalist Rebecca Galfalvi, AKA Arulei, releases her debut project and presents her electronic contemporary album, “Lost World.” The record was written, recorded, and mixed by her in her home studio in Bristol and mastered by Katie Tavini. The seven tracks deliver a multi genre journey, and explore themes of fatalism and feelings regarding changes in the Western political landscape since 2016. The piano, cello, synthesisers all feature in various pieces, but the violin functions as the grieving voice throughout the music. Arulei uses melancholic harmonies combined with uplifting melodies to bring an energised and emotional experience while drawing influences from different electronic styles and contemporary film scores. As well as using external world circumstances as her inspiration, she also draws on personal feelings such as grievance, confusion and isolation to enhance the emotional undercurrent of the pieces. Blending various elements from widely different styles, Arulei creates a vivid landscape inspired by magic realism. ‘Lost World’ is available on all streaming platforms now.

Why is the patriarchy dominating this meeting?
This is a great piece by Kezia Tomsett interviewing film composer Raphaelle Thibaut (The Secret of the Whales), jazz composer Nikki Yeoh, engineer and campaigner Olga FitzRoy and producer/songwriter Dann Liebermann about to the topic of being a parent whilst pursuing a career in the music industry, using personal experiences from these four working mothers.
